Ingredients for homemade Nutella recipe including hazelnuts, Medjool dates, cocoa powder, and coconut oil on a white surface.

The Ingredients You'll Need to Make Healthy Nutella

  • 2 cups of roasted hazelnuts
  • 10 Medjool dates
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil

How to Make Healthy Nutella in 5 Easy Steps (Video)

  1. Pit and soak the dates by placing them in a bowl of hot water for 5-15 mins.
  2. Blend the hazelnuts in a blender or food processor at high speed until they form a thick hazelnut butter. You can use the spread function of your blender, if available.
  3. Add soaked dates, cocoa powder, and coconut oil into the blender. Blend until smooth and creamy at a high-speed setting.
  4. Use some of the warm water that you soaked the dates in to adjust the consistency. About 1/4 cup should be sufficient for a creamy spread.
  5. Transfer the healthy Nutella to a jar and store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. It will be all gone by then anyways.

TIPS!

  • If you have raw hazelnuts, don’t worry. Just roast them in a 350F oven for 8-10 minutes until they turn a golden brown color.
  • For a smoother taste, try to remove as much of the hazelnut skins as possible as they can make the taste a bit bitter.
  • While any type of dates will work, we recommend using Medjool dates as they are meatier and have a sweeter taste.
  • If you prefer sweeter taste, you can add more dates.
  • If you enjoy an extra touch of flavor, you can consider adding a small amount of vanilla extract.
  • Did you notice? Our healthy Nutella recipe is vegan, dairy-free, and contains half the calories per serving compared to store-bought Nutella.

The Nutritional Benefits of Homemade Nutella for Babies and Toddlers

When you make Nutella at home, you can control the quality of ingredients and avoid the added sugars and preservatives found in store-bought versions. Here are some of the nutritional benefits of this homemade Nutella recipe:

  • Hazelnuts are a good source of healthy fats, fiber, and vitamin E, which is important for healthy skin and eyes.
  • Medjool dates are a natural sweetener that provides vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
  • Coconut oil is easily digested and provides a quick source of energy.

By using these wholesome ingredients, you can feel good about serving Nutella to your little ones. However, it's important to note that Nutella should still be consumed in moderation due to its high calorie and fat content, especially at early ages.
